Quick, AI-generated content has begun cluttering up search results in recent months, making it harder for users to find useful, relevant content in response to their queries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One recent scourge has been the proliferation of AI-generated obituaries, designed to capitalize on the wake of searches for the departed\u2019s obit in the wake of their passing. The problem is, many of these AI-generated obituaries have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24065145\/ai-obituary-spam-generative-clickbait\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riddled with errors<\/a>, and in some cases are written about people who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/19\/us\/fake-obituary-scams-ai-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">haven\u2019t even died<\/a>, generating ill-gotten clicks from shocked friends and fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It had gotten to the point where many advocated adding &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nickdothutton\/status\/1765738218081628165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before:2023<\/a>&#8221; to searches, to roll the clock back to before the flood of AI-generated noise. Others were forcing Google to search <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2023\/06\/google-admits-reddit-protests-make-it-harder-to-find-helpful-search-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit<\/a> exclusively, to get around the results Google presented to user-generated content they found more useful and relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of this leads to one conclusion: Google searches weren\u2019t natively producing quality content anymore, and users were getting increasingly fed up with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Purpose Of Core Update 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google has a history of updating their algorithm in order to produce better experiences for their users. Previous updates introduced \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insticator.com\/core-web-vitals-what-they-are-and-why-its-vital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Core Web Vitals<\/a>\u201d measurement, which prioritized pages with fast load times and stable designs. Other updates have tried to penalize sites that engaged in \u201ckeyword stuffing\u201d or manipulative linking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In recent years, Google\u2019s emphasis has been on getting people to produce higher-quality content with the audience in mind, instead of trying to manipulate the algorithm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google\u2019s 2024 Core Update takes aim at low-quality, AI-generated content. Their stated goal was to reduce \u201cspammy\u201d content by <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/google-search-update-march-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 40%<\/a> with their latest changes, though when the update finished rolling out in April they said it was closer to 45%. That\u2019s a lot of content, and if you\u2019re a publisher, it\u2019s important to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Does The 2024 Core Update Do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Importantly, the 2024 Core Update <strong>does not<\/strong> ban AI-generated content. Google doesn\u2019t have a problem with AI \u2014 in fact, after their update was completed they rolled out some AI features on Google themselves, to <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/googles-ai-search-overhaul-raises-more-questions-than-answers-for-its-dominant-ad-business-181241830.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixed results<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, Google is focusing on reducing \u201clow-quality\u201d content, whether it was written by a generative tool or by a lazy human. They\u2019re cracking down on this from multiple directions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Scaled Content Abuse:<\/strong> \u201cScaled Content Abuse\u201d is when a site produces a high volume of pages that don\u2019t have a lot of helpful content, but simply exist to trip up users on search engines. Examples of this would be the flurry of websites that pop up when you try to find a celebrity\u2019s age or net worth, or content that is clearly a thinly-filed-out template with no helpful answers. Importantly, some of these sites are built and maintained by people, though AI can make producing this kind of page easier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Site Reputation Abuse:<\/strong> A good reputation is valuable \u2014 and this is true in Google\u2019s algorithm, too. Highly-rated sites known for helpful content can get preferential treatment in search results. Sometimes, these high-rated websites will rent out space on their domain name for lower-quality content, using the site\u2019s good reputation to get past the velvet rope. Low-quality content on normally \u201chigh-quality\u201d sites can confuse algorithms and users alike.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Expired Domain Abuse:<\/strong> Tech is no stranger to sites being sold or going defunct. Sometimes, after a site goes out of business, others purchase those expired domains in order to trick users (and search algorithms). It can sometimes take a while for algorithms to catch on to a repurposed domain\u2019s new management. Google\u2019s latest changes now consider such pages to be spam.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, Google has implemented tweaks to their quality algorithms and spam policies to make it easier to respond to issues quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Do I Do About The Core Update?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re a publisher, your goal should be the same as it always has been: produce good content. It\u2019s the best policy in the long run, and Google is actively working to make sure that better-quality content gets pride-of-place on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s nothing wrong with engaging in SEO best practices, but it\u2019s important to remember who you\u2019re writing for.
